Zagreb- the Capital City
The capital city of Croatia is one of the country's major tourism destination.
Zagreb
No visit to Croatia is complete without a corresponding visit to Zagreb, the capital city of the country. Not only is it the largest city in Croatia, but it is also one of the country’s major tourism destinations. The 1 million people that live within the city are able to live in a city that is truly one of Europe’s oldest, with the medieval flair that the city was initially given still shining through to this very day. For this reason, Zagreb has a lot in common aesthetically with classically beautiful Central European cities in countries like Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
Sighs to see in Zagreb
The two major areas that you should visit during your time in Zagreb are Gornji grad and Donji grad. Respectively, these two names translate to the upper town and lower town and basically are the areas in which all of the different sights are located. Everything from restaurants to eat at to religious institutions to attend (the city is home to a massive population of Roman Catholics, just as the rest of the country is as well) are available within these two areas of the city.
One of the major groups of sights that you can visit in Zagreb are museums. These museums showcase much of the history of the city and country that you would not otherwise find from touring. An example of this is the Archaeological Museum of Zagreb, which boasts over 400,000 different pieces for you to look at. Some of these are paintings, some are objects from periods long ago and some are testaments to the recent history that Croatians have experienced. There is also the Museum of Contemporary Art, which showcases contemporary Croatian artistic talent. For a more international flavor, you can also visit the Mimara Museum.
Things to do in Zagreb
One thing that you absolutely must do when you get to Zagreb is to take a tour of the upper town. This tour is held every day at 10 AM and starts at the information office for tourists. It is a two hour tour, so make sure you are fit enough to survive the whole thing, because it is easily the best way to make sure that you see all of the major sights in that area of the city.
Another popular activity in Zagreb is the movies, many of which are located at easy to reach locations from major tourist residential areas. Movies can be both local productions in Croatian as well as large productions that are shown in English with Croatian subtitles and it is also a good way to meet many of the locals in the city.
